Why I am looking at ChatGPT?
I have been reading about ChatGPT and about the ways it can be used. I think it is really important to keep up with technology. It occured to me it takes a lot of my time to find Gay artists to mention in my weekly newsletter, put in to my posts with lists of Gay artists, and do show cases.
Why not have ChatGPT help me?
Results of using ChatGPT
First Question: What Gay artists currently have Twitter accounts?
I got a lot of musicians. The current use of the word “artist” now includes musicians.
Second Question: What Gay painters are on twitter?
Results:
As an AI language model, I do not have access to real-time information or social media platforms, and my knowledge cutoff is in 2021. However, I can suggest some popular gay painters who might have Twitter accounts based on my training data: [Bold face added. No info of what is happening on Twitter.]
David Hockney - @David_Hockney
Keith Haring - @KeithHaringFDN
Jonathan Lyndon Chase - @jonathanlyndonc
Mark Bradford - @markbradford
Derek Fordjour - @DerekFordjour
Felix Gonzalez-Torres - @felixgonzalez
Christopher Wool - @ArtChristopher
Joe Brainard - @joebrainard
Paul Cadmus - @PaulCadmusArt
Paul Harfleet - @paulharfleet
It goes on to to say it isn’t an exhaustive list. Some of these are good Gay artists, and they are dead. The living ones have some art that only small art cliques with some avant-garde sensibility would find interesting.
This is art by Christopher Wool. The other living artists in this list are mostly the same.
Third Question: What living artists paint for the Gay community?
Result:
There are many contemporary artists who create work that speaks to and represents the LGBTQ+ community, including the Gay community. Here are a few examples of living artists who paint for the Gay community:
Ryan Sullivan - Sullivan creates abstract paintings that explore the fluidity of identity and the complexity of desire.
Shimon Attie - Attie is known for his multimedia installations and paintings that address issues related to LGBTQ+ identity, including same-sex relationships and the politics of queer visibility.
Zanele Muholi - Muholi is a South African artist and visual activist who creates powerful portraits of LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly Black lesbians and trans people, as a way of raising awareness about the violence and discrimination they face.
Heather Day - Day's vibrant abstract paintings explore themes of love, connection, and intimacy, often drawing inspiration from the LGBTQ+ community.
Firelei Báez - Báez creates large-scale paintings that examine issues of identity, race, and gender, often incorporating elements of Afro-Caribbean folklore and history.
Wu Tsang - Tsang is a multidisciplinary artist who creates paintings, films, and installations that explore issues related to queer and trans identity, particularly within the context of the Asian-American experience.
Kent Monkman - Monkman is a Canadian artist who creates paintings that subvert traditional depictions of Indigenous peoples and explore issues related to queerness, colonialism, and resistance.
Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and there are many more artists who create work that speaks to the Gay community.
This is a creation of Shimon Attie in the list above.
Fourth Question: Which living homosexual artists are creating homosexual art?
Results:
Many contemporary artists who identify as LGBTQ+ create art that explores themes related to their sexuality and experiences as queer individuals. Here are a few examples of living homosexual artists who create homosexual art:
Jordan Eagles - Eagles is a New York-based artist whose work often incorporates blood as a symbol of life and death, and explores themes related to sexuality and identity.
Hayley Barker - Barker is a Los Angeles-based painter who creates large-scale works that address issues related to gender, sexuality, and the body.
Félix González-Torres - González-Torres, who passed away in 1996, was a Cuban-born American artist whose work often incorporated elements of his identity as a gay man, including the AIDS epidemic and his own experiences of love and loss.
Keith Haring - Haring, who passed away in 1990, was a prominent American artist and activist whose work often incorporated elements of his identity as a gay man, including themes of sexuality, love, and community.
Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and there are many more artists who create homosexual art. [Boldface added.]
Notice that it recommends Félix González-Torres who died in 1996 and Keith Haring who died in 1990. Living evidently is a concept the ChatGPT doesn’t quit grasp.
Haley Barker is a woman with paintings about women and that is the fault of my question. The following is a creation of Jordan Eagles.
Fifth Question: Which living male homosexual artists are creating male homosexual art?
Result: (I get a little moralistic lecture here, even though this the results for the first four questions have been worthless.)
It is important to note that an artist's sexual orientation should not be the sole defining factor in their work. However, here are a few examples of living male homosexual artists who have created art that addresses themes of male homosexuality:
Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen) - Although he passed away in 1991, Tom of Finland's erotic drawings of hyper-masculine men continue to inspire contemporary queer art.
David Hockney - Hockney is a prominent British artist who has created numerous works that address themes of male sexuality, including his famous "pool" paintings and his portraits of friends and lovers.
Derek Jarman - Although he passed away in 1994, Jarman was a British artist and filmmaker who created numerous works that explored themes of queer identity and sexuality.
Robert Gober - Gober is an American artist who has created sculptures and installations that address themes of male sexuality and desire.
Brian Kenny - Kenny is a New York-based artist whose work often incorporates his personal experiences as a gay man, including themes of love, loss, and desire.
Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and there are many more artists who create work that addresses themes of male homosexuality.
Again, two of the artists are dead! Tom of Finland and Derek Jarman. Forty percent of the five replies are those who have died. ChatGPT doesn’t seem to have a grasp of the concept of living.
Also, David Hockney is a good Gay artist. The thing is if you were trying to find about Gay artists you didn’t know about, David Hockney isn’t really useful Only having 5 responses isn’t useful, especially since the living Gay artists are like the following.
This is art by Robert Gober.
Sixth Question: Which of the living artists are creating male homosexual art?
Notice that I rephrased the question in response to the little moral lecture ChaptGPT gave me.

I think all of them are alive, none of them are dead, so we are making progress here. This is something by Wolfgang Tillmans which according to ChatGPT is male homosexual art.

Need to do the question again being more precise. Use the term “paint.”

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and there are many more artists who create paintings related to male homosexual desire.
Daniel Sprick paints mostly women, often women, and landscapes.
I don’t know if anyone gets off on Omar Rodriguez-Graham
But in this case it isn’t a complete loss.
Andrew Salgado seems to be interesting, but somewhat abstract.
Let’s look at censorship.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and there are many more living artists who create homoerotic paintings.
John Currin mostly does nude women.
Eric Fischl doesn’t focus on Gay art. Mostly people at the beach.
Summary
I am warned by Substack I am near my email limit. I still think I might find some use for specialty questions like finding Gay artists in Indonesia or something very specialized. [Update, the ChatGPT scolded me for asking about Thai artists.] I will do a Part 2 about the scolding.
However, you can see that I did nine questions and I mostly either got things that you would know already like Hockney, or something that was not something Gays would be interested.
My non-AI efforts seem to be still necessary.
