Crackdown on Poppers
Fast Company, March, 14, 2025, “The FDA is cracking down on ‘popper,’”
This is the article which first reported the crackdown to the public.
Poppers have always operated in a legal gray zone. Now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is cracking down on their production.
This week, many major poppers brands began wiping their websites and social media presences. On Friday, Double Scorpio, a popular isobutyl nitrite brand, posted a statement on its website.
“Double Scorpio has stopped all operations following a search and seizure at our offices by the FDA,” it wrote.
The article reports that the crackdown has impacted the other retailers of poppers.
The article has a history of the retailing of poppers and the shifting from amyl nitrites to butyl nitrites and then to isopropyl nitrites to evade the law.
The article also mentions RFK Jr.’s views on AIDS and poppers.
In his 2021 book The Real Anthony Fauci, Kennedy cited Peter Duesberg, a leader in AIDS denialism. Duesberg theorized that “heavy recreational drug use” caused immune deficiency in gay men, specifically linking the spread of AIDS to the usage of poppers.
This theory has been discredited for some time.

The articles mention that when the FDA has been contacted, it has stated that it doesn’t comment on criminal investigations.
What instigated these raids, RFK Jr.’s theories about AIDS and Poppers or concern with poisoning?
The issue, like most everything nowdays, is politicized.
The New York Post, a conservative paper, in a March 14, 2025, article, “FDA cracks down on popular gay party drug ‘poppers’,” pointed out that there is an issue with poisoning occuring with poppers, but they also reviewed the issue with the theories of RFK Jr.’s theories about poppers and AIDS.
A study published this month in Clinical Toxicology investigated an area in New York City in which poison control centers saw an uptick in poppers poisoning, according to NBC News. Researchers questioned workers at 86 stores that sold poppers, asking how to use the product. Half said to inhale it, 44% did not know and 8% advised ingesting.
The article does make reference to RFK Jr.’s theories about AIDS and poppers, though whether he still believes these theories isn’t know, but there has been no publically stated change in views either.
While poppers have previously been incorrectly linked to AIDS in the LGBTQ+ community — an unfounded stance Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., has doubled down on despite lacking evidence — the misuse of poppers has been linked to adverse health effects.

Are Poppers Safe when just inhaled?
I haven’t studied the question. I would be concerned about the purity of the chemicals used and the long term effects. In food and drug manufacturing the purity of things inhaled or ingested need to be very pure and there is even a designation of “Food Grade” and the manufacture is rigourly regulated and moniored for safety.
As a Chemical Engineer in the semiconductor industry I was very careful to avoid chemical exposure. However, that doesn’t prove anything about poppers.
As people point out, they are likely safer than smoking cigarettes, but most everything that people consume is safer than inhaling pyrolyzed vegatble matter. As a chemical engineer I can tell you there are some really bad chemicals in pyrolyzed (burning with reduced air) vegetable matter.
So I am not going to make a judgement. Ingesting it is toxic, but I don’t think Gays do that, or do it more than once.
I think part of the problem, is that since it is being treated as a drug, and it exists in a gray legal area, safe methods and controls arein’t in place. I am not saying that it should or shouldn’t be legal, but the grey legal area itself is a contributor to the problem.
This is the opinion of the U.S. government is that it isn’t safe. Maybe it is more of a concern that I realize, but I haven’t observed over the decades a serious problem besides the smell.

People do use poppers to relax to be fucked. I don’t because I don’t need it.
So here is something you can use to relax and not need poppers. I developed it in the 1970s, (Am I old or what?), and I taught it to other young Gays at the time who said that they had a problem and later they told me that the technique worked well. It is likely working entirely on the power of suggestion, but what works, works.

Assessment
If the raids were due to a growing problem with poisoning or people being taken to the hospital that is one thing, and perhaps the raids aren’t the best way to deal with the problem, but it is part of the general way the United States government deals with drugs.
If it is due to RFK Jr.’s theories about AIDS and poppers, then it is a real serious problem. That means the U.S. government’s programs about HIV might be guided by crackpot theories about AIDS.
Having government programs about HIV being based on crackpot theories could result in policies that seriously risk the health of AIDS patients, maybe death.
Also, if you think AIDS is caused by poppers, then you likely won’t support finding an HIV vaccine nor allow one to be used.
