What I am looking for in popular culture to fight homophobia.
Popular movies, tv series, anime and other media. Something that has some measure of popular appeal, thought it might just be in a certain subculture.
Something that reasonably current. I would say 2010 or later.
Something that is indirect. Something that is against authoritarianism repression of religion, but not specifically mentioning any religion.
When something mentions a religion specifically, it might be effective in showing repressive elements of that religion, but it will mostly be watched by those who already have rejected that religion. Those who are members of a religion which the movie satirizes, won’t watch it. Others reject anything that appears to be partisan.
So the “Life of Brian,” with the Monty Python comedians is a real send up of Christianity, it is immediately recognizable as such. It does have value in reminding peopel why they have negative opinions of Christianity, and it might influence those who are having opinions, so it has value.
“His Dark Materials,” doesn’t specifically mention any specific religions. Yes, a lot of viewers might recognize what the series is saying, but it isn’t directly expressed, and many may just see it as a science fiction which often have grandiose settings. It doesn’t come across as a lecturing or heavy handed.
So that is what I am looking for. I consume very little popular culture and the examples I have written about so far, I have accidentally discovered.
To make this list longer, I ask for the help of my subscribers.
