Introduction
I have been struggling to write a book on being Gay and what Gay liberation should be. I have been working out different things.
I was able to write some parts, but I stalled out not knowing what to write next. I decided to write, in brief, what a Gay Liberation Movement should be and what its goals and operating plan should be.
The following is written in very general terms. I wanted it to be brief and focused on the ideas and not discuss specifics.
I did write On Being Gay and Gay Housing as a combined short book. You can download it for free. I will put links at the end of this short proposal.
I have also had thought about specific topics thinking about being Gay. I will put links to those items at the very end of this post.
I think the previous writing which I published in the form of a book supports this proposed plan.
I think all of us have ideas, but I don’t think we have put them together in a overall systematic plan. Unless we do, we will find ourselves going into the ditch as is the current situation.
Proposed Gay Liberation Movement Plan.
Goals:
1. Protect Gays from harm, including assault, physical and verbal, defamation, so-called converstion therapy, and discrimination
2. Provide support for the needs and wants of the Gay community.
3. Support and lead in the development and self-realization of the Gay community.
Plan:
These goals will be pursued by independent Gay-centric organizations of Gays and led by Gays for Gays.
These Gay organizations will choose independently the actions, programs, projects, tactics, methods, strategies and plan by to achieve the goals of the Gay community to have an independent agenda and not subordinate to any movement, political party, group or organization of general society.
The Gay movement isn't a subdivision of any general social movement and a general social movement isn't the Gay movement. Different general social movements might at some time and place be advantageous to the Gay community, but they aren’t our movement nor we theirs.
The range and scope of these efforts will not be confined to any single avenue, method or sphere of action, but will involve all possible actions to achieve Gay community goals.
To protect Gays from harm an assessment needs to be made without fear or favor what threats there are to Gays, what is the source of these threats, and what effective counter measures to be made.
To provide support for the needs and wants of the Gay community, an assessment needs to be made of the needs and wants of the Gay community as a whole and plans developed to support those needs and wants. This includes both material and cultural needs and wants.
To support and lead in the development and self-realization of the Gay community, venues, forums, media need to be developed for discussion, scholarship, and education to identify how Gays and the Gay community might develop and achieve.
Working with other groups will be contingent on whether working for a goal directly supports the goals of the Gay community. Dual identity organizations, that is Gay groups which are part of general social movements, such as Gay Democrats, Gay Psychologists, Gay Republicans, Gay social workers, Gay Christians, etc. should be understood to have an ambivalent role and both positives and negatives.
Gay organizations won’t work with groups that don’t support or are in opposition to the goals of the Gay community.
The plan as applied versus the current program.
Gays will be supported by a Gay organization of actual Gay men and not an organization with an initialism of 14 or more identies representing many different and often unrelated groups pressed together in which important Gay issues are neglected and the Gay agenda is dictated by non-Gays.
The Gay agenda will not be confined to electoral politics or academic venues. It will consider the entire scope of human actions for possible application to achieve the goals of the Gay community.
Threats will be critically and objectively assessed without favoritism or what certain segments of the Gay community might think or what the general society might think or prevailing ideologies. Based on these assessments, effective counter-measures will be undertaken without consideration of popular opinion or what the general society might think.
Programs to support the needs and wants will be directed towards the needs and wants of the actual Gay community as they are, not based on what some group thinks the Gay community should be, or restrained by what straight people might think, and without concern how it might be not be approved of by some group or align with some group’s agenda. In particular it should not be limited to or constrained by what some Gay faction of a general movement in society feels works with the Gay faction’s relation with the general social movement.
The primary challenge of a program of Gay development, self-realization, and self-determination will be to first overcome internalized negative attitudes towards homosexuality and being Gay resulting from them being in straight society and in a straight family.
For Gay development, self-realization, self-determination, it shouldn’t be presumed that assimilating, to be just like straight people is necessarily the goal of development and self-realization. Gay people have difference circumstances, different opportunities, and exist outside heterosexual society, and exist in all nations, peoples, and segments of society. Gay people shouldn’t fear being different, nor assume that being Gay is necessarily anyone thing. The goals of development, self-realization, self-determination should be based on the expressed desires and dreams of the Gay community.
Dual identity Gay organizations can be good in terms of bringing the concerns of Gays into a general organization for their consideration, and to end harms that the general organization might be causing. The example of Gays in the field of psychology, where they eliminated the designation of homosexuality as a mental illness, is an example of the important work that Gays can do. Gay Democrats, Gay Republicans, and other groups of Gays in other political movements raise Gay concerns and also oppose homophobic attitudes and policies. A lo of good does come from dual identity Gay organizations.
However, it needs to be also understood that they can have negative effects also. A Gay caucus or subgroup is just a few percent of the larger more general movement or organization. To advance their agenda within the larger movement they will need the good opinion of that movement and so will conform to the values of that organization or movement regardless whether they align with the values of the Gay community. To get favor from the larger general movement or organization there will be an incentive to overlook or explain away homophobic behaviors or policies by that larger general movement. Gays in dual identity organizations will want to believe that their movement’s goals are the Gay community’s goals, and Gays who are not in alignment with their movement should be marginalized or denounced as enemies of the Gay community.
Conclusion
From these general principals a Gay movement can be created that would protect and serve the Gay community, have objectives that Gays would support and keep it independent and self-directed.
